2 stroke +

26th October – 18th November, 2007

It’s been three years since Felicity Peter’s impressed us with her solo exhibition of contemporary jewellery and objects.  She is about to embark again on a major collection of new work inspired by Aussie icons such as corrugated sheet metal. The two stroke Victa lawnmower references the title ‘2 stroke +’, as well as the other Australian influences in her work.

The ‘plus’ in the title refers to Peter’s recent 3 month stint in Rome, made possible by the Australia Council for the Arts residency grant which enabled her to research ancient  Etruscan jewellery. She also spent time in the workshop of internationally esteemed jeweller, Giovanni Corvaja, increasing her skills in granulation as well as experimenting with a new range of pure gold and silver alloys.

Since returning to Perth, Peters' has been making exciting new pieces with gold and silver. Voluptuous beads, like poppy heads feature in bold rings, and lava bead necklaces.  Coloured stainless steel wires suspend the neckpieces. Gem stones feature strongly in the work, especially tourmaline slices.   The ‘keum boo’ technique which has become Peter’s signature (a Korean way of fusing gold sheet to sterling silver), is used across the range which adds to the abstract effects, and most notably on the ‘Loving Cups’ - delicate his and her cups made of gold and silver which are made especially as exhibition pieces
