Diana Watson
... ‘Halcyon’
10 Aug – 9 Sept, 2007

Following her near sell-out exhibition of last year ‘Aquitania’, Gallows Gallery presents another solo exhibition by renowned Sydney artist Diana Watson, ‘Halcyon’.

Originally from Perth, Diana Watson has recently held another successful exhibition in Sydney.   Her work is highly recognisable for her signature style of large-scale still-lives depicting fruit and this time she turns her eye and hand to flowers too.   Watson partakes in the long tradition of still-life painting that goes back to the ancient Egyptian tombs, Roman frescoes and which are mentioned in Greek legend.

Watson’s paintings are reminiscent of the highly symbolic Dutch still-life painting of the 17th century, whilst evocating the atmosphere of the ancient Roman era. ‘Halcyon’ refers to the opulence of the Golden Age, with luscious colours and intriguing compositions which play with perspective.

Watson was encouraged to pursue a career in art by her high-school art teacher, Robert Juniper.  She graduated from Perth Tech in 1963 and has had a varied career which has included being a Fashion Artist for advertising in the mid 60’s, teaching, being commissioned to do Tromp L’oeil in private homes and exhibitions in Italy, New York, California, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the New Norcia monastery.  Since she moved from Perth to Sydney about 5 years ago, Watson has enjoyed tremendous acclaim for her skilful works and this occasion promises to be another sensational exhibition.
