Gallows Gallery

Diana Watson

Following her sell-out exhibition of last year ‘ Eden ', Gallows Gallery presents another solo exhibition by renowned Sydney artist Diana Watson, ‘ Aquitania ' .

Diana Watson has recently held another successful exhibition in Sydney this May. She is well known for her signature style of large-scale still-lives depicting fruit.

Watson's paintings are reminiscent of the highly symbolic Dutch still-life painting of the 17 th century, whilst evocating the atmosphere of the ancient Roman era. The title ‘Aquitania' is a mythological place in Gaul during the time of the Roman Empire . Myth and mystery abounds in the periphery of her compositions, where the lavish settings of an opulent bygone age are cleverly conjured. Watson partakes in the long tradition of still-life painting that goes back to the ancient Egyptian tombs, Roman frescoes and which are mentioned in Greek legend.

Watson was encouraged to pursue a career in art by her high-school art teacher, Robert Juniper. She graduated from Perth Tech in 1963 and has had a varied career which has included being a Fashion Artist for advertising in the mid 60's, teaching, being commissioned to do Tromp L'oeil in private homes and exhibitions in Italy, New York, California, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the New Norcia monastery. Since she moved from Perth to Sydney about 5 years ago, Watson has enjoyed tremendous acclaim for her skilful works and this occasion promises to be another sensational exhibition.
