BILL  JEFFREY
space between then and now

14 Sept – 14 Oct, 2007

Gallows Gallery is thrilled to have Bill Jeffrey again exhibit his wonderful bronze sculptures and plaques.

In ‘space between then and now’, Jeffrey presents a range of works that represent his constant travel in the space between ‘then and now’.  As a senior artist, he finds himself at a pause in his journey, which he says “has allowed me to visit some impossible reality which is at the centre of my creative spirit”.

For Jeffrey, this “creative spirit” has a feminine quality as he searches for his ‘anima’.  The work reflects this journey of the soul finding deep personal mythologies which he brings together with a visual symbolic language which he hopes will probe his audience in a similar way, and arouse their memories of past experiences.

Jeffrey says: “My work which is a statement in an artistic practice can be summed up by: necessity, love and self-discipline.  As I work, my doubts seem insurmountable as I struggle to articulate using sculpture as another form of human consciousness.”

Contorted figures and boats and fish are strong elements in this work and Jeffrey uses these tools of ancient symbolic language to reinterpret humanity as it has evolved in the contemporary world, thereby connecting the inner struggle of the artist as a metaphor for the ongoing struggle of society.
