Gallows Gallery

Mark Grey-Smith

Gallows Gallery is privileged to announce ‘TURN' the upcoming exhibition of exciting new sculptural forms in aluminum and terrazzo by influential Perth sculptor Mark Grey-Smith.

‘TURN' is an exploration of the sculptural possibilities of signs. The common 2D arrow shapes found on roads worldwide take on architectonic and even anthropomorphic personas in this original and highly skilled work. Grey-Smith has played with the motif of the arrow, giving various shapes and circumstances through the process of box construction, some are accentuated with his signature black terrazzo the other pieces are all-over polished alloy.

Arrows are emotionally laden, potent images that are embedded in the collective psyche, they point to the future and their aesthetic value is everlasting. Dating back to Paleolithic tools, the arrowhead and the flint had distinctive uses, the arrow became a symbol for intention and direction and is denotative of the industrial world.

The sculptural arrows of Mark Grey-Smith demonstrate the influence of archaic sculpture, especially Cycladic figures from pre-Hellenistic Greece . Grey-Smith's forms are sleek and seamless, ambiguous, curvaceous and light – both in physicality and subject. In addition there will be two major ‘GERM' series works in the courtyard, which further demonstrate the exciting possibilities of this sculptural design system. ‘TURN' is a significant collection of Grey-Smith's current body of work, a culmination of ideas gathered whilst visiting Central America in 2005.

This exhibition is running concurrently with Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe beach, where Mark Grey-Smith is also exhibiting a major piece.

‘TURN' can be viewed from March 1 st at Gallows Gallery.

The exhibition is officially opening on Friday 3 rd March, with a speech by Richard Read, Assoc. Professor in Art History, ALVA, UWA
