In my works I aim for a unity within the interaction of form and colour. They are steel constructions of elements that carry my imprimatur – a tension between preference for form and technical limitation.
Where does the making start?
Definitely this is most self-conscious stage, imbued with a vague direction or idea that usually contributes little but a starting point. Beyond that, the work evolves and I am the maker obsessed in completing the work. The perfect ‘stillpoint’ seems never to be attained, but hopefully it is approached. In this process, the work becomes a manifestation from the unconscious, collective unconscious - and Carl Jung and others have much to say about that!
Sculpture potentially offers a different experience of cognitive engagement to that proffered by other arts, visual or otherwise. As such, explanations in word can become cumbersome, convoluted or so categorically vague as to miss the essence in a work. Titling of a work is usually the most laboured and tardy action as it can imply only one facet, one perspective of what that work may be about.
This is the excitement that I find and crave in making sculpture – to bring something new into this world to be seen and experienced.
