Tim Macfarlane Reid

Tim Macfarlane Reid is a West Australian sculptor who has been working and exhibiting for the past 11 years. Recently an exhibiting artist at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, this is his second solo exhibition at Gallows Gallery.

"Tim manages in the current work to evoke a serene stillness and balance not unlike those glimpses you get in the early morning of people in parks practicing Tai Chi. They are moving, but ever so slowly and with such a sense of determination to articulate the gesture perfectly. I think achieving that in a material like steel that as we know has more in common with the fabrication techniques of heavy industry than Chinese ink drawing is one of the strengths of Tim's sculpture.

What is unique though are the rhythms and sense of balance that is at the core of Tim's work. That and the shifting contours that activate each work visually when you change your viewing position.

Tim's work picks up on a sense of movement and on how contours can create multiple images and how parts, no matter how small, can come to stand for a different whole. His works create dynamic worlds that invite us in to complete the story. Worlds that change, as you move around them, and open up new ways of seeing both the figure and the land. "

Since his last solo exhibition at Gallows in 2004, Macfarlane Reid has been recognized with the Mosman Park Art Award, the Mindarie Sculpture Award and the Perry Lakes Garden Art Award. The current body of work explores the essential issues of sculpture--form and space--in a dynamic and energetic interpretation. The sculptures are fabricated from steel, stainless steel, Austen steel and bronze, and range in scale from small indoor pieces to large outdoor works.

As a window into the working process of sculpture, the show will include sculptural sketches. These sketches capture the gestural quality of many of the sculptures, exploring the form and movement of a work in a given space.

With references to the artist's ideology and glimpses of Macfarlane Reid's signature motifs, the works encompass many themes. Overriding all of this, there is a presence evident in the works, which speaks to the viewer and encourages a dialogue about our perceptions of space.

‘IMPRINT – SCULPTURE 2006' will be opened by Gary Dufour, Deputy Director of the Art Gallery of W.A on Friday July 21 at Gallows Gallery, Mosman Park, exhibition on until September 3 rd 2006.
